Legal documents should be understood by everyone who signs them.
ClearTerms was founded in 2025 with one goal: make it possible for any person — not just lawyers — to understand what they're agreeing to.
Legal documents protect the party that wrote them. Contracts, terms of service, employment agreements, NDAs — they're written in dense, precise language designed to hold up in court, not to communicate clearly with the person signing.
The result: most people sign agreements they don't fully understand. Not because they're careless, but because understanding legal language requires training that most people don't have and time that most people don't have.
ClearTerms changes that. Upload any legal document — a freelance contract, an apartment lease, a SaaS terms of service — and get back a structured breakdown in plain language: what the document says, what risks it carries, what obligations it creates, and which party it favors.
How the analysis works
Document extraction
Your file is sent to LlamaParse, which extracts the full text of your document while preserving structure. We support PDF, Word (.docx), plain text, HTML, and RTF files up to 50MB.
AI analysis
The extracted text is sent to GPT-5.2 with specialized prompts designed to surface what matters in legal documents: key terms, risks, obligations, financial clauses, and the balance of power between parties.
Structured output
The analysis is returned as a structured breakdown — not a wall of text. You get a plain-language summary, risk ratings, obligation list, financial terms, favor scale, party identification, and suggested attorney questions.
Interactive Q&A
Ask follow-up questions about your document in plain English. The chat interface has access to the full document context and your analysis results.
Security & privacy
Encrypted at rest
Document text and analysis results are encrypted using AES-256 before storage. Encryption keys are managed separately from the data they protect.
Encrypted in transit
All data is transmitted over TLS. WebSocket connections for real-time updates use WSS.
Private storage
Uploaded files are stored in private cloud buckets with no public URLs. Access is only possible through authenticated requests.
No model training
Your documents are never used to train AI models. Each analysis is a fresh API call. ClearTerms does not retain document text beyond your account.
What ClearTerms is not
Not legal advice. ClearTerms summaries are for informational purposes only. Nothing produced by ClearTerms constitutes legal advice, and ClearTerms is not a law firm. If you have questions about your rights or obligations under a specific document, consult a qualified attorney.
Not a replacement for legal counsel. AI analysis surfaces risks and obligations quickly, but it cannot account for the full business context of a deal, jurisdiction-specific nuances, or the strategic judgment an experienced attorney brings. Use ClearTerms to come to a legal conversation prepared — not to avoid having one.
Not perfect. ClearTerms performs best on standard commercial contracts, terms of service, and employment agreements. For highly specialized or jurisdiction-specific documents, AI analysis is a starting point, not a final word. The accuracy section of each analysis reflects this.
